Welcome to Sam Elliott Fitness. This is my blog. I will not shy away from describing some of my more abstract thoughts as this blog develops. This being the first post, however, I think it ought to serve as more of an overview. You will hear me say "Never Settle" frequently on social media and here on the blog. Obviously, the phrase is common and I don't claim any originality in it. It is a phrase that I use to summarize an idea, perhaps the greatest idea mankind ever had. The idea that you can exchange comfort for growth as a way of bartering with the future. The process of voluntarily foregoing immediate gratification in return for something better, deeper, and more meaningful somewhere down the line. It serves as an ideal and like everything else discussed here, it applies to every area of life. Not just physical fitness.
The idea is simple, that there is more to you than you could possibly know. I would argue that seeking the upper limit of that notion might be a good use of time and energy, if not one of the best. That is to say, if you "Never Settle" in trading comfort for growth...where might you end up? My theory is that there is no limit, and that's what I am here to explore. Now, before you jump down my throat with reasons why this is unreasonable, unnattainable, or unhealthy, let me remind you that this is to serve as an ideal. A North Star with which to fix your gaze, knowing good and well that you will necessarily fall short. That is why I use it as a guiding principle. It implies that the finish line moves with you, making it an outstanding motivational force for positive change...so long as it is met with a healthy level of discretion. An ideology like this can and most certainly will cause issues if taken to its pathological extremes, so it is paramount that we point towards progress, never perfection.
Through my experience, I have come up with an actionable course for introducing these principles into one's life. It is a working progress and an imperfect science - but it is actionable. This set of actions, ideas, and beliefs are what I hope to develop and explore throughout the series of posts on the blog - along with a slew of tips, tricks, and techniques I have learned along the way surrounding food, exercises, programming, mental toughness, goal setting, supplements, sleep, recovery etc.
